Oh Mom. I need another story.
Just a short one.
Mom, please. I need a glass of water.
Just a small one.

Bedtime deep in the city,
It’s lights out, still it’s so pretty.
As Red, the light out the window turns Green,
Reflects on the wall back to Red.
I feel myself falling Green, falling asleep…
While the city stays awake
Beneath the darkened sky.
It murmurs and mumbles and quietly rumbles
A city lullaby.

Eyes closed, a siren is singing and
Far off a telephone’s ringing as
Tick tock, the grandfather clock in the hall Tock ticks. Drip Drop,
The faucet is falling asleep. Falling asleep…
While the city stays awake
Beneath the darkened sky.
It murmurs and mumbles and quietly rumbles
A city lullaby.

The traffic is strumming the strings
On the bridge. Red tick tock, green drip drop.
I hear the comforting hum of the fridge…

Good night noises go hush-a-bye. All’s right. Signs blink a lullaby:
On, the neon hotel sign goes off.
Off fly the planes toward the dawn.
The light on the corner goes yawn.
While the city stays awake
Beneath the darkened sky.
It murmurs and mumbles and quietly rumbles
A city lullaby.

This song appears on Tom Chapin's Billy The Squid CD.
