Preacher Herman

Preacher Herman preached a sermon
On a sunny day.
But all that I could think about
Was going out to play.
Squirm fidget fidget fidget
Scratch fidget fidget fidget
Squirm fidget scratch fidget
Fidget squirm scratch.

Preacher Herman’s Sunday sermon
Stretched on endlessly
’Til everybody in the church
Began to feel like me.
Ahem/sniff...
He’s still talking...

Preacher Herman just ignored
The squirming in the pews.
The choir’s feet were fast asleep
And tingling in their shoes.
Stamp/stomp...
He’s still talking...

Preacher Herman didn’t hear
The congregation roar:
“If you don’t stop we’re getting up
And going out the door.”
Stand/sit...
He’s still talking...

Preacher Herman made his point
And made his point and then
Preacher Herman got inspired
And made his point again.
Help/stop...
Preacher Herman sure could preach.
We would have loved to stay.
And as we left we all agreed
“He’s got a lot to say!”

This song appears on Tom Chapin's Billy The Squid CD.
